-The Global Tapestry of Alternatives seeks to build bridges between networks of Alternatives around the globe and promote the creation of new processes of confluence. You can know more about the project, in our [[:​introduction|introductory note]]. 
  
-We, across the world are facing immense uncertainties that pose very serious challenges and have social, economic, political, cultural and ecological implications for most of us. The attempt is to bring to you the news, perspectives,​ thoughts, ideas, reflections,​ and dialogues on alternatives to the current dominant regimes. Importantly,​ what do they offer us as pathways towards just, equitable and ecologically wise futures. It is a humble attempt to bring together the collective envisioning of these pluriversal alternatives by creating a space for sharing and dialoguing.+## Editorial Note

We dedicate this periodical to him and it starts with an obit for Gustavo authored by Franco Augusto and Arturo EscobarAdditionallythe periodical features updates from our weavers in India (Vikalp Sangam) ​and Mexico and Colombia (Crianza Mutua), envisioning of post-growth economy by Post-growth Instituteand perspective pieces from Lina Álvarez Villarreal, Xochitl Leyva Solano and Axel Köhler and Talking Wings.+Learning has a central role in the construction of the world and the subjectivities that inhabit ​it. The relational condition of human beings means that when their social relationships changetheir world and they themselves are transformed. Pedagogies not only shape human reason but also build our sensibility ​and desire. Learning processes not only have central role in the reproduction of relations of dominationbut also in the processes of liberation.

This model is also the cause and the result of a colonial, capitalist and patriarchal system, where it is assumed that there is only one way of knowing, thus conceiving knowledge as an exclusive property of western civilization (coloniality of knowledge); it is presumed that there are a series of experts who possess the knowledge and are called upon to teach those who are in a condition of ignorance; pedagogies are disconnected ​from the potentialities and needs of the territory where it is taught. Thus giving rise to a universalist and abstract knowledge; and pedagogies that exclude nature, for it is assumed that Earth is an entity from which there would not be much to learn.

A book review by Christine Dann featuring ​the book "​Convivial Futures: Views from a Post-Growth Tomorrow"​ by authors Frank Adloff and Alain Caillé presents a concise analysis of the text. Recently“Beyond Money: A Post Capitalist Strategy” a webinar series ​by Anitra Nelson, David Barkin, a Mexican economist, ​and Meenakshi Guptaan Indian social entrepreneur discussing money could be replaced as the organizing principle of society allowing the fabrication of a world without socio-economic inequality and crippling environmental stresses was curated. -Goinvite youth from projects around ​the world +In an effort to build solidarity and connect to movements working for change, the Global Tapestry of Alternatives once again had an active presence at the World Social Forum in 2022. This year the WSF took place both in-person in Mexico City and online from 01-06 May 2022. GTA organised ​and participated ​in various activities in-person in Mexico and online. At most of the events, language translation was offered. Six members ​of the GTA core group were able to travel to Mexico to participate in the WSF in person.

-**let our river pass** ​+GTA sessions included: (1) Staying human at the global level on the experiences of remaining grounded in the local while working transnationally;​ Grounded voices: Toward radical democracy with experiences shared from India, Mexico, Scotland and Rojave ; (3) Knowledge and the production of learning for emancipatory practice on critical pedagogies; and (4) Radical transformative alternatives where GTA weavers from Colombia, India and Mexico shared their experiences. In addition, GTA supported endorsers May First Technology with their session on “A timeline from movement technologies to liberation” and MINGAnet with a session on Latin American fabric towards the social and economic transformations required for the care of life. All of the activities were carried out in collaboration with partners in [[https://​adelante.global/​doku.php?​id=about | Adelante]]: a dialogue of global processes which GTA has been facilitating. Most significant was two assemblies which GTA organized on Convergence of Radical Alternatives. With over 100 participants in the online and in-person events, we were able to share a [[https://​adelante.global/​doku.php?​id=events:​wsf2022 | manifesto]] for radical change. This manifesto was also presented at the closing Agora of the World Social Forum and at the Stockholm+50 People’s Summit in June 2022.
  
-even though there are no more fish +For the past two decades, the World Social Forum (WSF) has served as an open meeting place for social movements, networks, NGOs and other civil society organizations who are aiming to build alternatives ​to the dominant and destructive world system. -During the last months, Crianzas Mutuas Colombia has participated in several activities. By the end of November 2021, we had a first encounter with Vilkrap from India and Crianzas Mutuas México. Since we all speak different languages, we decided to share our paths through a video that compiles our struggles in different territories of Colombia. Concretely, we have been nurturing emerging alternatives in the spheres of health, economy, education, and art. The aim of these efforts is to liberate Mother Earth and the peoples that have learned to live in a symbiotic relationship with her. We encourage solidarity economies through the creation of peasant markets that are better understood as “markets of resistance”. The idea is to create exchange webs that ensure reciprocity through food sharing. This means that trade must assure benefits both for the producers and the buyers, and that these benefits must be based on the regeneration of agriculture. We also encourage urban gardens and short commercial circuits. Regarding health systems, we are working on the construction of popular and communitarian systems that build from ancestral knowledges. We have also been working on harvesting water, for water brings life, movement, and knowledge. In midst of fierce and egregious violence, we see life flowering thanks to the resistance build from and with the earth, and indigenous, peasant and afro-colombian modes of life.+### Offers ​and Needs Market
  
-Alsowe are collectively writing a book titled Pluritopías. Después del fin del mundo de la civilización y la barbarie (Pluritopias. After the end of the world of civilization and barbarism). The aim of the book is double. We want to bring back to our memory the paths that we have been walking over the last years in Crianzas Mutuas Colombia, and to shed light on the multiple ways of weaving with the territories that we inhabit on behalf of life, joy, and abondance beyond State, capitalism and patriarchy. The book traces back the emerging processes of more than 40 collectives in Colombia that are building alternatives in the face of coloniality and development. The book also recalls the conversations entertained with Crianzas Mutuas Mexico and Vilkrap India, dialogues that nurture and inspire our own paths. The book is written both in Spanish and in non-colonial languages, it also includes non-logocentric languages, such as videos, songs and images.+**by Crystal ArnoldEducation director at the Post Growth Institute**
  
-On February 2022, we gathered in Cali around the presentation of the book Pluriverse. A post-development dictionary. The book was presented by Arturo Escobar and Alberto Acosta, and it was commented by afro-Colombian,​ indigenous, and peasant social leaders. This was the opportunity to reflect on the importance of inspiring the imagination of sustainable futures by shedding light on existing alternatives in the region. 
  
-Finallywith the Tejido de transicionantes por el Valle del Cauca we are currently working on a dream that is already emerging: ​to redesign the Valley of Cauca region based on enrooted conceptions of Buen vivir (good living) ​and abundance. This region has been marked ​by racial violence and ecological devastation,​ due to sugarcane plantations and illegal economies that actively produce the rural and urban zones divide. This violence is not hazardous but results from a modern design whose aim is the accumulation of capital. While the spirals of knowledge are: mθrθp (listening),​ aship (seeing), isup (thinking) and marθp (doing), the pillars are autonomous economy, autonomous administration,​ socio-political organization,​ and major law (derecho mayor). This educational process was born in the month of December 2010 as a response to the need of the community to reinforce the learning processes from intra-cultural foundations (or from autonomous education), as well as from the construction of a dialogue of knowledges (interculturality),​ and from those transcultural and global foundations that affect us as human beings.

 +Convivial Futures starts with bold premises. The introduction by the book’s editors, the German sociology professor Frank Adloff and the French professor emeritus Alain Caillé, states that 
 +“To be a pioneering, public political philosophy, convivialism must succeed in capturing the signs of the times and developing perspectives for the future. As difficult as it is to formulate such positive outlooks, that is precisely what this volume is all about.” (p 9) and also that 
 +"​Convivialism presents itself as a political philosophy destined to follow in the footsteps of the great ideologies of modernity—liberalism,​ socialism, anarchism, communism. These ideologies are no longer able to enlighten us on either the present state of the world or what it could or should look like tomorrow, if only because they have completely failed to anticipate the environmental crisis and global warming."​ (pp 14-15)

 +Unusually, and to its credit, Convivial Futures then provides space for those who disagree with the premises of its editors, and some of the contents of the Second Convivialist Manifesto, which is the current expression of convivialist philosophy. Some of the critique comes from fellow academics (Robert van Krieken and Martin Krygier, ‘Is Convivialism the Answer? Depends on the Question’) and some from non-academics (Andrea Vetter and Matthias Fersterer, ‘Right Here, Right Now The Art of Living Together’). At a slight tangent – but a useful one – Federico Demaria and Ashish Kothari provide a good outline of current notions of ‘development’ and what the alternatives are and might be in ‘The Post-Development Agenda Paths to a Pluriverse of Convivial Futures.’
  
-The Alternatives Project -- known by its initials as TAP -- is an international ​and geographically diverse network ​of progressive academicsunion members, civil society activists, and social ​movement participants concerned with building a global collective critical voice-oriented towards transformative education ​and societal change. At the moment we have about 25 core membershundreds of people have signed our Statement (including Noam Chomsky, please sign!) ​and attended some of our activitiesand TAP is in our second year of operation.+So the book is a mixed bag, with some contributors outlining ​and advocating hypothetical future re-designs ​of economic, social and ecological institutionssystems ​and practices which would be better than the current awful systemwhile others provide information on what is actually happening now which could be described as convivial. Sometimes both in one chapter.
  
-We had our launch webinar in January 2021 at the World Social Forum and participated again in a webinar at this year’s WSF.  In February2022, we organized a two-hour webinar concerned with education, social, and economic alternatives in February 2022 in conjunction ​with other leading organizationswith over 100 participants entitled: “TAP on TAPAS: The Alternatives Project on There are Plenty of Alternatives!” ​+If you are new to learning what’s wrong with the current world system, ​and are interested ​in ideas on how it could be improved, then Convivial Futures would be good place to start. If you feel you know more than enough about what’s wrongare sceptical about attempts to imagine ‘solutions’ which “terrorise the necessary complexity”, and agree with Ivan Illich (as cited by Vetter and Ferstererp 165) that what is convivial tends to be place-centred and vernacular (and hence happening here and now – wherever your here and now may be) then probably what you are looking for is a book on convivial presents. I know I am. Here’s hoping it turns up soon.

This has led to her developing an '​alternatives'​ world view which is now informed by degrowth, decolonial and indigenous perspectives. She is a member of the GTA Core team.
  
-Mainstream education is oriented to training students in every way for a future role in capitalist workplaces. Transformative learning and emancipatory education are significant alternatives for skilling ourselves to create and experiment with postcapitalist futures. Many activist scholars inhabit such spaces. My recent work Beyond Money: A Postcapitalist Strategy (2022) is a case in point. I wrote the book as an intervention in movement debates around ideal futures. And as a counterpoint to dystopian visions such as highly automated, digitally-oriented societies with regulated, modified or quasi-markets,​ or as a state-regulated quasi-ecosocialism maintaining some level of market activities. Associated articles and reviews in Radical Ecological Democracy and two Global Tapestry of Alternatives webinars have promoted discussion around the key place of money and markets in a socially just and ecologically sustainable future. The book is being publicised widely in a range of forums.

-I have an enduring interest in monetary and autonomist money-free economies, a major theme in my activism and academic work. I have experimented with no/low money models and practices. Decades ago I lived in a commune at a tricky point when the direction and content of the collective work of members and their collective purse became controversial. My personal and scholarly interest in eco-collaborative housing culminated in writing a book Small is Necessary: Shared Living on a Shared Planet (2018), the final chapter of which leads in a nonmonetary direction. Moreover, that book is really about degrowth, even if ‘degrowth’ is never mentioned. Exploring Degrowth: A Critical Guide (2020) written with Vincent Liegey proposes an ‘unconditional autonomy allowance’ that could be an entirely nonmonetary or in-kind right to basic needs collectively produced locally.

-I have belonged to four local/​labour exchange trading systems (LETS) in three distinct areas of Australia and to one Community Exchange System — developing a critique of such alternative currencies in Beyond Money.

-When I lived in the Blue Mountains (NSW Australia) I co-founded a nonmonetary Fruit and Nut Tree network, to share harvests, knowledge and skills in growing and maintaining these plants. It incorporated trees on public and private property. It was inspired by an existing project that still operates where I live now. The community-based Growing Abundance Harvest Project enables harvest and pruning volunteers to keep one-third of their pickings, while the owners of the fruit trees get another third, and the final third goes to local community organisations,​ such as schools and regular community lunches. Pruners reduce pests and disease regionally and pass on removed material to local free range chickens. ​ 
-An occasional speaker at Melbourne Free University, a couple of years ago I convened Castlemaine Free University in my home town, currently operating once a month with intentions for more regular activities. Again the venue, speakers, and membership is free.
